Preserving Ancient Sites, Improving Modern Lives
The Copan Maya Foundation is a non profit organization created to support educational, cultural and environmental projects in Copan, Honduras and their immediate neighbors. Some of the past and present educational projects include:
2002 – present Casa K’inich Childrens Museum located in Copan, Honduras. Copan Maya Foundation provides funds for upkeep of this non governmental children’s museum; the only one of its kind located in close proximity to a Maya ruin. In 2019 the Museum is closed for updates and is scheduled to reopen in February 2020.
2011 – 2016 Guaras en Libertad La Belleza Regresa educational component taught to over 6000 youths in the Copan Valley and beyond on the importance of conserving their national bird; the Scarlet Macaw. Because of this education the Scarlet Macaw flies freely in the Copan Valley without risk of being trapped or killed; it is the only existing flock of Scarlet Macaws that exists in such close proximity to a populated area.
2014 Museum Connect Community Garden Project Copan, Honduras
2011-2014 Proyecto Maya taught in Copan area schools giving area youths education about their Maya heritage.
2016- Remodeling and creation of Casa Sharer which provides housing for researchers and students who visit Copan
2018-Provided funding for conservation support of the Early Copan Acropolis Program (ECAP) in Copan Ruinas, Honduras
The Copan Maya Foundation was founded in January, 2000 and has IRS designated 501(c)(3) nonprofit status. Donations are fully tax-deductible.
